La storia della parrocchia ‘Beata Vergine di Lourdes’, la parrocchia giovane del paese, inizia diverso tempo prima della sua costruzione, e con non poche difficoltà, aggiungerei. É il 1951. Oltre la Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Barbara, c’era la chiesa del Sacro Cuore, dove il 30 settembre di quell’anno fece il suo ingresso come parroco il sacerdote Alfredo Cauli, da Mongorgiori. Intorno al 1954, poiché il centro abitato si stava espandendo anche nella parte bassa, verso la statale 196 che collegava i vicini comuni di Guspini e Villacidro, gli abitanti della zona sentirono la necessità di una nuova chiesa. L’appello venne subito accolto dal parroco “Monsignor” Cauli, che veniva chiamato così in segno di rispetto. Immediatamente si prodigò per trovare un sito adatto alla costruzione della nuova chiesa. Poco tempo dopo si presentò l’occasione di costruire nei pressi di piazza Verdi, grazie alla decisione di un proprietario di vendere la sua vecchia casa con giardino. Con l’approvazione dell’allora Vescovo Monsignor Antonio Tedde venne stilato l’atto di compravendita. Ma subito, le prime difficoltà: gli ingegneri giudicarono il terreno non abbastanza ampio per poter costruire la chiesa. Passarono circa dieci anni tra possibilità di terreni adatti e successive rinunce dei proprietari e priorità date al compimento di opere più importanti in altre parrocchie.
Finalmente, nel 1966 si decise di costruire la chiesa in un terreno acquistato nel 1957 dalla ditta “Montevecchio”, sito in un’area ancora rurale ma che in quegli anni iniziava a popolarsi. Stipulate le pratiche burocratiche, iniziarono i lavori.
Il 22 febbraio 1968, quattro operai iniziarono a scavare le fondamenta. Il 1° marzo dello stesso anno arrivò il primo carico di blocchetti dalla cava di Fordongianus.
Il 1° Maggio del 1968 ci fu la posa della prima pietra. Racconta Luciana: “io stavo nel luogo in cui oggi si trova il campetto da calcio dell’oratorio, c’era una grossa montagna di terra e pietre, accumulata grazie agli scavi per le fondamenta, ero solo una bambina quindi ricordo che ci salii sopra per vedere meglio la cerimonia. Erano presenti tutte le autorità civili e religiose e tanta gente ovviamente. Con un grosso paranco calarono un blocco di cemento armato nel luogo in cui oggi sorge il presbiterio. Nel blocco di cemento c’era un foro in cui venne inserita una pergamena che venne firmata da tutte le autorità presenti. Posso dire di aver visto letteralmente nascere la nostra chiesa”.
Don Cauli fu nominato parroco della nuova parrocchia.
Il 1° Maggio del 1970, le statue della Beata Vergine di Lourdes e di Santa Bernadette furono portate in processione dalla chiesa Sacro Cuore, precedute dalla banda musicale “Giacomo Puccini”, alla presenza del Vescovo, dei parroci del paese e delle autorità locali. Finalmente, anche se con infissi provvisori, pareti interne senza intonaco e senza i banchi, qui il Mons. Tedde celebrò la Santa Messa davanti a una folla che aveva riempito la chiesa dall’ingresso fino ai piedi dell’altare.

The youthful Parish of the town
The story of the parish of Beata Vergine di Lourdes (Blessed Virgin of Lourdes), the youthful parish of the town, actually starts some time before its build and with many difficulties, I would add.
It’s 1951. Other than the parish Church of Santa Barbara (Saint Barbara), there also was the church of Sacro Cuore (Sacred Heart), when on September 30th of that year made his entrance as priest Alfredo Cauli, from Morgongiori.
Around 1954, since the town was expanding towards the lower area, towards the state road 196 that connected the close towns of Guspini and Villacidro, the residents of that area felt the need of a new church. The appeal was immediately accepted by “Monsignor” Cauli (lit. “Bishop”), who was called that way out of respect. He instantly strove to find a suitable site to build the new church.
Soon ofter the opportunity presented itself to build close to Verdi square, thanks to the decision of an owner to sell his old house with a garden. With the approval of the then Bishop Antonio Tedde the deed of sale was put together. But then the initial difficulties arrived: the engineers considered the ground not large enough to build the church. Ten years had passed between the possibility of suitable grounds, renunciations of the owners and the priority given to the completion of more important works in other parishes.
Finally, in 1966 they decided to build the church in a ground bought in 1957 by a company called “Montevecchio”, located in a rural area that started to populate in those years.
After taking care of the paperwork, finally the construction started.
On February 22nd 1968, four workers equipped with pick and shovel showed up at the place and started to dig the foundations. On March 1st of the same year the first load of grey and pink stone blocks arrived from the cave of Fordongianus.
On May 1st 1968 the first stone was installed. Luciana says: “I stayed in the place where now the oratory soccer field is located, there was a big soil and stone mountain, built up from the digging of the foundations, I was just a kid and I remember that I went up the mountain to get a better view of the ceremony. There were all the civil and religious authorities and so many people. With a big hoist, they lowered a block reinforced concrete in the place where now the presbytery is located. The block had a hole where it was inserted a paper signed by all the authorities. I can safely say that I’ve seen the birth of our church.”
Father Cauli was nominated priest of the new parish.
On May 1st 1970, the statues of the Blessed Virgin of Lourdes and Saint Bernadette were brought in procession from the Church of Sacred Heart, preceded by the marching band “Giacomo Puccini”, in the presence of the Bishop, of the town priests and the local authorities. Finally, with temporary fixtures, interior walls without plaster and without the benches, Bishop Tedde celebrated the Holy Mass in front of a crowd that filled the church from the entrance to the altar’s steps.
